COIL is a premium natural hair care brand built specifically for women with 3B–4C curl patterns.The design challenge was building trust with a community that has historically been underserved and over-promised to by the beauty industry.
The natural hair care market is growing fast but it has a trust problem. Decades of products that promised curl definition and delivered disappointment have made 3B–4C hair buyers deeply skeptical. A brand entering this space can't just look premium. It has to prove it understands the community before asking for a purchase.
COIL's design was built around community-first thinking. The homepage doesn't open with a hero product shot. It opens with a hero person a real woman with beautiful, defined coils in natural light. The product comes second. The human experience of having natural hair comes first. This sequencing is deliberate and strategic.
The most important design innovation on the collection and product pages is the curl type compatibility system. Every product card shows which curl patterns it works best for — 3B / 3C / 4A / 4B / 4C directly below the product name. This answers the buyer's primary question before they click: "will this actually work for MY hair?" Removing that hesitation at the browse stage significantly reduces the decision friction that kills conversion in this category.
The colour system was chosen to celebrate warmth and richness — deep terracotta, warm cream, dusty rose. Not clinical white. Not the cold minimalism of mainstream beauty brands. COIL's palette signals from the first scroll that this brand was made specifically for and by the community it serves.
